Margrethe to Frederick

Margrethe says to never write anything down
Words aren’t statues, language not hard concrete
Remember to speak, she says, use your words
Meaning has to travel on air, so as it speaks true
There’s no understanding in symbols on stone
Stone is not flesh, is not receptive, is not us
A voice to an eardrum is blood to an eager brain
Frederick, she screams. The high ceilings echo it
Frederick, Frederick, Frederick, freedom to speak
Fingers will not transmit; their nature is apposed
Fingers want to manipulate, scratch, and poke us
So sing, Frederick, instead of scrawl, your desires
