Lovingly Come to Madrid
o

A spacecraft on rocky ground;
you wake in a room with levitating bed.
Stepping to the floor and shrugging it off
you throw a paranoid glance at the ceiling.

The whirring of an electric fan draws you in,
confronted by a small half-bathroom with sink,
you are wearing cycling gloves. Unclean?
You lovingly wash your gloved hands in lather.

You won’t be with me, or on my side;
you’ll be a beamer, a sweet roll pusher.
A taste of the moment totalitarian, you.
When the bulwarks break, you’ll run.

Through the turnbuckle, will our lengths
maintain the tension of dramatic irony?
Or snap under the crude expectations,
the lurid expectations, of the crowd?

Sunday Mornings

My love is in my leg curve,

sleeping his soft paw dreams

He seeks the nighttime prey,

mouse, bird and rabbit

He does not hate the prey;

he longs for their company

Their true embrace of limb,

uplifting his internal wilderness

“Blood Water” – K. Shawn Edgar 2032

Extent to Wall

ø

On Saturday, March 7, 1856 Magdalen Morales saw the face of Landin Qualm through the window glass and screamed:

Someone else laid this skin. Years ago. It was but a single mix, a fledge of flint. Simple bake. Take from it the little nourishment contained.

Face bait
she has an unpleasant
dead taste
Boiled egg waste

she won’t set right

indissoluble in the pit

upsetting crumble cries

from fiery demon thighs

Neighboring long-boned sailors

sadly cruising the shallows

These Glasses are Glassless

•••

•Blue lights in a yellow-green sky

appear through the window around a kitten.

A kitten who’s a cat, full grown. Light blue.

There, on a green collision of kemp.

There, far beneath layers of iron-oxide dust.

See cat, with a raccoon tail, sleeping in a snore.

See light blue, lights blue, bouncing sun hues.

Falling, see these pieces break into possibilities.

Out of order dissimilarities, full blown.

Is it its own, or mine? Yellow-green sky blue

the cat knows it from the warmth of the glass.

Blue lights in a yellow-green sky

appear through the frames around mine eye.

An eye that’s a mind, full grown. Hazel green.

Annie Christ in Ashland

Oh
Oh

U
Annie
Christ,
you know Ashland
Its streets know you
Your raw animal heart
beating
peace
full
E
I
O
U
we
declare
nations
of Claire
The three of us
spending nights on tennis courts
blinding the lamp lights
shooting stars with bendy straws
Polaroid flash snaps
Eyes blink
out
Oh
Oh
Oh
Ashland
U
U.S.
Far side
Oregon
south of Eugene
A rogue town of drama
park life and festival noise
Our blood soared
encouraging our extremities
to pleasure the pop-art culture
and exhale colorful letters as sounds
Our actions, not always as they seemed
not always as we intended
so high on dynamic thoughts
creating college campus bomb threats
O
E
I
I
U
We slid out from under
leaving the heavy stuff behind
leaving our baggage to the learned
to the stall of enthroned knowledge
We
slipping into the night
We
slipping into arcade light
out of arcade light
Dancing through steam
from manhole covers
and laundromat exhaust vents
until screams came
out the mouths of little charging
midnight creatures, and
the mesmerizing sound of claws
hurrying over layered asphalt and concrete
stopped us flat out
Beat
Beat
Exhale
E
I
O
U
Annie
Christ,
your memories I pluck
banging the strings
the broken cello strings
on an Ashland corner
in the dark

The Lesser of Two Meanings

Levee: the second can resemble the first.

Along the river Futurity,
its lips licked by tongues of fresh snow melt,
sediment builds a ridge like the assembly of men
around a monarch’s morning wakefulness.

Sentinels pile up behind the gnarred current
bleating grains of what’s to come.
Farther down the river
the ridges are already forming.
